| Why is this happening?, are people in denial, throwing 9s and 10s but secretly agreeing more with the negative reviews instead of the positive ones because deep down they know this movie sucked?, positive reviews are all like "muh boy Shinji is finally happy, muh feels, thank u Mr. Anno", the more critical reviews are objective and use good arguments for why this movie is a piece of sh*t. I think this movie's score will go down, this is a case of Phantom Menace syndrome, fans were waiting for this movie for so long they feel they must like it no matter what, "Shinji is happy, I don't care how out of character he acts, I don't care his character development was rushed as hell, mah boy is finally happy", ugh, it's disgusting seeing some OG NGE fans saying this movie was the greatest thing ever, even better than End of Evangelion. |

| I guess that's possible. On the other hand, it could just be that the majority of the reviews themselves are negative, while the majority of the people who watched the film gave it a high score. Those two don't have to be the same group of people. |

However, you've gotta understand not everyone is going to have your same view about this movie. Maybe, just maybe, there's a chance that there are some people like me who wanted to like the originals but were displeased with the way certain things were handled and liked the rebuilds better. That in no way invalidates your own opinion, but it does factor in to the difference in scores. |

I never said all art is good. All I was doing was calling out your repeated use of "objectively bad" in your argument. If I thought "all art is good" I wouldn't have given NGE a 4/10 now would I. There's plenty of garbage stuff out there. However, it's all subjective because Everyone's definition of "Garbage" and "Amazing" is going to be slightly different. There's tons of sloppy writing in this movie. However, it is my subjective opinion that it is still a better overall product than NGE and EoE. I believe that the first half of Thrice upon a time, specifically the stuff with the village and with look a like Rei is fantastically written. And despite the flaws of this ending, I still personally value it more than the fever dream "very limited budget works" ending of NGE and the WTF ending of EoE. While I think the climax of EoE is artistically compelling, it personally gave me 0 closure and both endings were a major reason I didn't like the originals overall. For me, the fact that the originals just feel almost entirely devoid of all hope just doesn't work for me personally. The rebuilds still focus on the same psychological issues as the original, but then also gives the characters a chance to start to battle their inner demons. The rebuilds and originals both don't care very much about explaining certain things in the universe, but the rebuilds focus on actually tackling the mental issues instead of the whole "everything is terrible and Everyone's a piece of shit" vibe I got from the originals. In my opinion, this and other factors puts the writing of the rebuilds over the originals for me. In no way am I saying the rebuilds and this movie are flawless. In addition to this, many of yours and others criticisms of the movie are very valid. However, so are my criticisms of the originals. That's the awesome thing about art. Everyone is going to view the same work through a slightly different lens, and that prompts discourse like this. There will be plenty of people in multiple camps, pointing out to each other their thoughts. |

| I think rebuild 2.0 when it launched was even higher than 8.73. Give it a couple of years and then you check it again (not that the rating matters much imo)... All the new animes and movies are usually overrated at the start. |

| I don't vote reviews, but I personally think the original evangelion wasn't very good, but had something special about it. The rebuilds had nothing special about them, so while quality wise they were slightly better, all you are really left with is a mediocre series of movies hat has an (spoiler) ending that erases everything that happened. So I'm not overly negative, I do kind of wonder why the people who wanted Shinji to have a happy ending are rating it as highly as they are, because I don't think this ending is actually a happy one, i'd put it on par with him waking up from a bad dream, at best its a cheap happiness and not a meaningful one. |

First off, I don't hold any contempt for anyone who loved this movie. You're entitled to, and frankly I'm happy for people who could love it. But there are plenty of reasons that I (and many others) couldn't. Of course, all the following is but my humble opinion, so feel free to take it with some salt, but you know. I don't. Oh, and spoilers for the Rebuilds, obviously... Like, maybe some of us just wanted Shinji to be coherent as a character and *still* overcome his obstacles, instead of magically recovering from immense trauma in an instant thanks to Rei—practically the only character who got any development in this movie—being reduced to an LCL-shaped plot device? Maybe we were interested to see Asuka and Misato (and hell, even Mari) become more than the personality-starved paper cut outs they had been in the first three movies? Maybe we didn't want the excessive, dehumanising fanservice which often served no point to the story—in contrast to how it pretty consistently moved story forward in NGE? Maybe we wanted a Rebuild quartet that made sense as a whole, instead of the confused Star Wars Sequel trilogy-esque clusterfuck we got? Now, to be fair to 3.0+1, there was already always going to be an uphill battle giving depth to the characters who were left so shallow in the earlier three films. (Especially after the timeskip in 3, and the resulting swath of borderline unbelievable plot-driven character behaviour.) But as I already said, there was so little development for anyone but Rei. The village sequence was gorgeous, of course, but that's all this movie was for some of us. Visually beautiful, cinematographically interesting, but so much less depth than it needed—so much less personality than NGE and EoE had taught us to expect from Anno. In that sense it was painfully reminiscent of something like Kimi no Na wa, to me—trying to deal in near-universal feelings with the help of visual excellence, yet with little more than one-dimensional characters on offer. I really wanted to love this movie. So badly. But ultimately these are the kinds of things I find myself feeling about it. I feel gutted. If this can't convince you that you don't have to be a shit person to be unhappy with the results of 3.0+1, maybe it'll convince someone else. Well, anyway, I'll take any excuse to vent about it. :3 (Parting note: fuck Gendo. Dude always was an asshole, and "I'm sad about Yui" and "I'm shy" doesn't excuse his inordinately shitty behaviour and willingness to traumatise his son. Really didn't need to give him an arc when nearly no one else in the movie has one, lol.) |
